MD902 Explorer Twin Engine Helicopter

MD902 Explorer Twin Engine Helicopters

Our two helicopters have been chosen for their safety features which include no tail rotor, important in an urban environment.  They have been specially adapted for their purpose, to enable patients to be treated to the standard of an intensive care unit in flight. Although the helicopters are equipped to take a patient to the hospital, this is not always the case. Often, the patient will travel by London Ambulance Service accompanied by our trauma team.

We acquired our second helicopter in early 2016 thanks to the generous contributions to the 'Your London, Your Helicopter' campaign from the people and organisations of London, including London Freemasons, who pledged £2 million.
When on duty, our helicopters are operated by two pilots for safety reasons over London. The co-pilot acts as a navigator and communicator –  talking to air traffic control and looking out for wires and high buildings while identifying an appropriate landing site.

Our pilots commonly land at box junctions, multi-storey car parks and busy areas in central London.

24/7 COVER FOR LONDON
To ensure 24/7 cover for London, the helicopter is replaced by cars after dusk or in adverse weather conditions. The cars are able to drive under blue lights, reaching the patient safely, and as quickly as possible.

London’s Air Ambulance uses high performance Skoda Octavias equipped with blue lights and high visibility strips to deliver the team to the patient at night. Our paramedic drives on blue lights and the doctor navigates to the scene of incident. London’s Air Ambulance has its own internal driving licence to prepare the team to drive under blue light conditions during the day or night.

August 2017

Our remodelled PRU is launched thanks to funding from Tower Hamlets Together. Previously an 8 hours a day, 5 days a week service, the PRU is now able to respond to 999 calls 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round. Because of these longer hours, up to 50% more patients will be seen, be able to get the care they need quicker and hospital and ambulance resources will be freed up in East London.

More about PRU (https://londonsairambulance.co.uk/our-service/news/2017/10/remodelled-pru-to-be-a-seven-day-service-for-the-first-time) Will need to update link
