Pre-hospital care and emergency medical elective programme

London’s Air Ambulance offers opportunities for undergraduates to undertake an elective in pre-hospital care and emergency medicine. This elective is offered in collaboration with The Royal London Hospital’s emergency department, Queen Mary University of London (Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry) and the London Ambulance Service.

During the placement, there are several training and learning opportunities. The majority of time will be spent in the emergency department and with the London’s Air Ambulance team. Students will not be permitted shifts on the aircraft under any circumstances.

To optimise your learning experience during the elective, the minimum period for an elective is four weeks and maximum is six weeks. Due to the high volume of applicants, we do not allow any holiday breaks during a placement.

Are you eligible for an elective placement?

To check your eligibility to undertake the pre-hospital care and emergency medicine elective, please read the Visiting Student’s Elective Programme page on The School of Medicine and Dentistry’s website, where full details (including UK immigration permission, language requirements and fees) are provided. All applicants should ensure they also read the School of Medicine and Dentistry Visiting Student’s Elective Programme Handbook for more information regarding eligibility. It is a requirement of the programme that students must be in their final year at the time of an elective.

The elective programme opens for applications three times during the year: March, August and November.
The time you should apply depends on when you would like to undertake your elective, the dates to apply along with the application form can be found on the QMUL website.

Please send further questions regarding your eligibility to [email protected].

Important Notes

Our elective placement is offered purely for observational purposes, in order to comply with occupational health and immigration requirements. As per page five of the Visiting Students’ Elective Programme Handbook, “students are only permitted to take one elective period at [Barts and the London] school during their medical training, and may take a placement in one specialty only”. This means that students that have previously undertaken an elective through the school are not eligible to apply for the pre-hospital care and emergency medicine elective programme.

Information

Ensure you have thoroughly read through the Visiting Student’s Elective Programme Handbook, including those sections concerning registration fees and payments. To determine whether or not you are required to provide a Tier 4 Student Visa please read the Queen Mary University of London Immigration page: https://www.welfare.qmul.ac.uk/international/immigration

Accommodation

Please keep in mind that living costs can be expensive and, in addition to your accommodation, you should consider the cost of food and transport. Most students choose to stay in accommodation offered by the Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, although there is no guarantee this accommodation will be available during the elective dates. Instructions needed to secure this accommodation will be sent to successful applicants as part of their elective offer. Some students organise their own living arrangements as London has a wide range of accommodation types.
