London students swimmer

Ten swimmers from Queen Mary Barts and London (QMBL) University Swimming Club recently restarted their club’s fundraising calendar and selected London’s Air Ambulance Charity as the recipient.

“We wanted a local and London-based charity and we have a lot of medical students who work at The Royal London Hospital – where your helipad is – so it felt like a great fit,” said Barbara, QMBL Swimming Club’s Social Secretary.

On Saturday 15 March, the club therefore took on a swimathon to raise some funds. Each swimmer swam non-stop for a whole hour, with individuals having their own slot throughout the event, which ran from 8am to 6pm.

The swimmers were spread across the capital, with one swimmer even taking part from Liechtenstein!

“Altogether we swam over 29km and have so far raised nearly £300.”

The club has also previously run a bake sale to raise additional funds and plans to host a fundraising event once a semester.

We’re so thankful for the swimming club’s fundraising efforts and look forward to seeing what they plan next. For years, London’s Air Ambulance Charity has collaborated with Queen Mary University of London, through the delivery of our courses in The Institute of Pre-Hospital Care.

London students swim to raise money for LAAThe Institute of Pre-Hospital Care aims to set a high standard for international pre-hospital medical education and prepare doctors and paramedics to meet it. This occurs primarily through higher education programmes and bespoke training programmes. A core component of The Institute’s education strategy is The Intercalated BSc in Pre-Hospital Medicine, which is delivered in partnership with Queen Mary University of London's Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. This degree was the first of its kind in the UK. Find out more about the Institute.
