After tripping in November 2021 and consequently suffering a traumatic brain injury, Mark has made a miraculous recovery, returned to running and raised over £9,000 for our life-saving charity.
Falling down an escalator in Bank Underground Station, Mark hit his head and was in a critical condition. London’s Air Ambulance’s advanced trauma team was dispatched to the scene and on arrival immediately worked on extricating Mark out of the station. The crew then administered a rapid sequence intubation to protect Mark’s airway and placed him in a coma – something only our crew can do in London. Remaining in a coma for a few days and in hospital for weeks, there was a moment Mark was unsure if he’d walk again, let alone run. But, he has made an incredible recovery.
After rehabilitation, regaining his balance and improving his stamina, in March this year Mark ran a half marathon in Antarctica – meaning he has run either a half or full marathon on each continent – to pay thanks to our team that saved his life.
This marathon saw Mark run 13.1 miles in Antarctica’s snowy, cold conditions and is a testament to his dedication to recovery.
“When I first started running again after my accident, I could only do half a mile,” said Mark. “This course was hard work – the course was very hilly and the temperatures between zero and two degrees Celsius, but I completed the half marathon.”
As well as the Antarctica marathon, Mark also ran London Landmarks Half Marathon this April. “That was such a good event, so well organised and supported. I enjoyed it!” This run was also for London’s Air Ambulance Charity: altogether he has raised over £9,000, enough to fund nearly three whole missions.
