“In emergency medicine, there are some things you can treat and within an hour see the patient’s condition improve. If someone has been in lots of pain due to a dislocated ankle, you can help them quite quickly. If someone’s heart is going very fast or if their blood pressure is very low, you can sometimes relieve their condition there and then. That’s one of the most rewarding things about being a doctor,” says Sophie Mitchinson.

Louise joins us from Guide Dogs, where she spent nine years as Head of Communications and Campaigns, developing the marcomms function and leading its brand strategy, as well as instigating a charity wide digital first strategy.

We would like to express the warmest of thanks to ERS, who on the 30th January hosted a pub quiz to raise vital funds for our charity.

The quiz, which took place at Revolution America Square, was attended by staff from across the ERS team and featured rounds on London landmarks and showbiz. As well as the quiz, the evening also featured a raffle, giving attendees the chance to win over £1,250 worth of prizes. The evening was a huge success, raising over £2,500 for our charity.

A review of our remodelled Physician Response Unit (PRU)’s first 111 days has revealed that patients are receiving specialist emergency treatment quickly and avoiding trips to hospital. By taking the Emergency Department to the patient, 67% of those seen have been treated and discharged at home, allowing the patient to begin their recovery immediately in the community.

We were delighted to welcome Woodford Green resident Peter Farrier to our helipad last week after he won the top prize of £1,000 in our lottery.

Peter was encouraged to sign up to the weekly draw after speaking to our charity’s face to face fundraisers. He visited our service’s helipad base at The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel to collect his winnings and learn more about our work. He was joined by his son David for the visit, who has supported our charity since his uncle was saved by our advanced trauma team.

British artist Jeremy Houghton has held an exhibition of his work in aid of our charity. 

The event was held at Gallery 8 in central London, with guests gathering to view Jeremy’s paintings and also learn more about our life-saving service. 

Speeches were given by Jeremy, charity trustee James Charrington and Lead Clinician Dr Gareth Grier.

Jeremy kindly donated 25% of all sales to our charity, helping to raise much needed funds to help us continue to provide London with an advanced trauma team.

Doctor Chrissie Hymers, paramedic Karen King and Firefighter Joanna Waite have visited Hornsey School for Girls to speak to students about London's Air Ambulance and their careers.

The talks were arranged by Pilot Andy Thomson, and aimed to inspire the students to take Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) courses and pursue a future career in these STEM subjects, where sadly women are still underrepresented.

During the Marathon des Sables, competitors run on average 26 miles every day in the scorching Sahara heat. They’ll need to be on their feet for long hours and keep a cool head under pressure. 

As a member of our Fire Crew, Mick is well accustomed to long and unpredictable days but the race still presents an epic challenge. 

“I’ve had a few people ask me ‘are you mad?’ I can neither deny nor confirm that," laughs Mick.

On 17th November 2017, Darren and Julie Munro pulled out all the stops to throw a glamorous gala in aid of London’s Air Ambulance and the Fire Fighters Charity. 130 guests came together at Kingswood Gold and Country Club to support our charities, where they raised an incredible £9,500 for London’s Air Ambulance and £19,000 in total.
