As National Air Ambulance Week gets underway, London’s Air Ambulance is releasing incident figures from 1st January to 31st August 2014 to enhance public understanding of the service we provide for London.

So far this year, we have treated 1,144 patients.  Incident types were as follows:

•354 road traffic collisions; of which 133 were pedestrians hit by vehicles; 78 were motorcyclists; and 45 were pedal cyclists

Having chosen London’s Air Ambulance and Midlands Air Ambulance as their charities of the year, staff at Phoenix Group have embraced many fundraising challenges in 2014 to raise money for both charities, including a  sky dive, a hike, an abseil, a cycle and a cake sale, all in only 6 months.  A recent visit to the London’s Air Ambulance helipad marked the half-way point of the charity partnership. So far, Phoenix Group staff have raised over £43,000 with fundraising activities continuing until April 2015.

The annual Golf Challenge at the prestigious Foxhills Club & Resort in Surrey raised over £5,000 this September. 

"It was a great day when all participants enjoyed the excellent weather, the manicured Bernard Hunt Golf Course and the first-rate facilities provide at Foxhills, " said the event organiser Brian Donnachie. 

"The sponsors of the day were Santander together with Power Horse Energy Drink who have both supported the event in the past."

We spoke to Colonel Charles Newitt, the first Chief Operating Officer appointed by the charity.

BlackRock, one of the world's pre-eminent asset management firms, raised over £260,000 towards our second helicopter campaign. The BlackRock London Office took on challenges to raise money for London's Air Ambulance. From the Virgin Money London Marathon to the British 10K; the BlackRock Cycle Challenge to the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 and even traveling across India in a Rickshaw. Whether they supported their colleagues by donating or took on a challenge themselves, the support has been phenomenal.

On 3rd September MPs and Peers attended the London's Air Ambulance Reception in the House of Commons to demonstrate their support for our charity. The event was hosted by Mary Macleod, Brentford & Isleworth MP, and Rushanara Ali, Bethnal Green & Bow MP — key supporters of the charity.

Former military officer deployed to strengthen charity’s operational performance

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Charles Newitt to the newly created post of Chief Operating Officer (COO).  The role will have operational responsibility for service delivery, as well as helping to execute the charity’s operational strategy.

“The London’s Air Ambulance team who treated my dad were second to none. I just turned 18, got a bit of money and wanted to help with their fundraising for a second helicopter so that more people could benefit from their incredible work,” says Corrin who raised over £1,000 for London’s Air Ambulance doing a 13,000ft skydive.

In his 14 years as an emeritus paramedic with London’s Air Ambulance, Steve has treated hundreds of seriously injured patients as well as doing his fair share of fundraising. How does he see the role of our charity’s supporters? “They are us. We are the extended hands of our supporters, of what they have done,” says Steve pointing to a picture of 5-year-old JJ, whose sponsored swim raised enough to send a helicopter to another person after we had treated his uncle.
