Channel 5's 'Trauma Doctors: Every Second Counts' returns for a third series on Thursday 10th March at 9pm, featuring London’s Air Ambulance and The Royal London Hospital and Barts Heart Centre, Barts Health NHS Trust.

The six one-hour weekly episodes will provide an insight into the thought processes and decision making that takes place when our advanced trauma doctors and paramedics are treating critically injured or complex patients. Viewers will be 'inside the heads' of the team as they make critical, split second decisions.

To celebrate Student Volunteering Week 2016 we would like to share some stories about some of our own student volunteers who are regularly supporting London's Air Ambulance.

Orion, Community and Database Volunteer

Orion decided to become a volunteer because he is passionate about working to help the local community. ‘I chose London's Air Ambulance because I think there is no better charity that benefits the whole of London.’

Six year old Megan from Fulham is one of the lucky winners to name one of our helicopters. The winning name, selected for its emotive reason, is 'Walter', named after Megan’s Grandad. On an exclusive visit to our helipad at The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel this week, Megan got to see her chosen name in all of its glory. The name has been placed on the new helicopter, the G-LNDN registered MD902 Explorer.

In celebration of Shrove Tuesday, 20 teams took part in the Great Spitalfields Pancake Race organized by Alternative Arts to raise funds for our charity. Teams of four raced up and down Dray Walk at The Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane suitably dressed up, or down, tossing pancakes on the way. The E Team Clowns kept control of the crowds and the Lost Marbles String Band provided a melodious soundtrack.

Teams of four, suitably dressed up (or down) will gather to compete for the honour of becoming this year’s race champions when they run up and down Dray Walk at the Old Truman Brewery. We are inviting entry-level City workers to take part in the London’s Air Ambulance ‘City Bounce’ event — a Zorb football tournament on 10 March at Play on Sports Arena in Whitechapel.

In partnership with Tokio Marine Kiln — the leading provider of specialist and corporate insurance —— ‘City Bounce’ is where teams will don inflatable Zorbs in an alternative take on the traditional five-a-side football tournament, competing to be crowned our ‘City Bounce’ Champions.

We are trialling a brain scanner in the pre-hospital environment, to detect on scene for potentially life-threatening head injuries. The Infrascanner works by detecting blood clots on the brain, allowing for earlier and more accurate diagnosis of potentially life-threatening injuries. Early diagnosis will speed up the patient’s access to any further treatment that they may need once they arrive at hospital.
