When John Power, Chief Fire Officer at London’s Air Ambulance joined the charity on 1st April 1994, his ex-colleagues at Battersea Heliport joked that doing it on a Fool’s Day was rather telling — leaving a stable job for a charity whose future was unpredictable seemed foolish to many. “We were always fighting our corner and no one could be sure if London’s Air Ambulance would be around the next year’” says John. It has been exactly 20 years today.

Recent top prize winners Mr and Mrs Rand visited London's Air Ambulance helipad for a tour of the aircraft and operations. The couple even witnessed the helicopter take off for a mission.

When London's Air Ambulance announced its weekly lottery winners, Mrs Rand could not believe they won.  Her husband had to double check the results on the Lottery section of our website.They kindly donated 10% of their £1,000 lottery prize to the charity.

Their Royal Highnesses (TRH) The Earl and Countess of Wessex visited London’s Air Ambulance today as part of a tour around two charities supported by the Wessex Youth Trust (“the Trust”) on the Earl’s 50th Birthday.  TRH The Earl and Countess of Wessex awarded London’s Air Ambulance a grant for over £10,000 in November 2013 towards paediatric training manikins through the Trust.

The Institute of Pre-Hospital Care at London’s Air Ambulance (“The Institute”), and Queen Mary University of London’s Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry (“QMUL”) have partnered to create the UK’s first Intercalated BSc degree in Pre-Hospital Medicine.  Pre-hospital medicine is an innovative and growing field that is now recognised as a sub-specialty by the General Medical Council.

“When I joined, there were many misconceptions about London’s Air Ambulance, including that we are fully funded by the NHS or a flying patient transportation service,” says Siobhra Murphy, Head of PR & Communications. In 2011, she became the first in-house member of staff dedicated purely to communicating the key messages via PR and marketing.

Siobhra oversees all aspects of the London’s Air Ambulance brand, from managing PR campaigns to marketing collateral and everyday management of the charity’s digital channels, including the website and social media.
